Independent Member for Nelson

I have loved being the independent member for Nelson, and hope to be re-elected in May 2025

Meg is a strong, independent voice in the Upper House

Want to see Meg re-elected? Support her 2025 campaign!

As a true independent in the Legislative Council, I have worked hard to hold the Government to account and champion the interests of our community.

Since 2019, I have made a real difference advocating for integrity and good governance, being a voice for our community in Parliament and working for a fairer future for our state – but there is always more to be done.

I hope to continue representing you as the Independent Member for Nelson, keeping our community at the centre of my work, and striving for positive change.

Meg Webb MLC

Key Accomplishments

I work hard to represent and support the people of Nelson and I’m proud of my track record

Transparency & Governance

  • Ministerial Diary Disclosure — Due to Meg’s work, the government now discloses its Ministerial Diaries every three months. Meg continues to push for greater and more frequent diary disclosures.
  • Robust Lobbyist Register — Meg contributed to ensuring the new Lobbyist Disclosure Register, to be overseen by the Integrity Commission, is as robust as possible.
  • RTI Reforms — Campaigned for Right to Information reforms, including increased funding for the Ombudsman’s Office.
  • Integrity Commission — Advocating for an Integrity Commission with meaningful investigative powers.
  • Police Oversight — Campaigning for an independent police oversight body.
  • Privacy Legislation Review — The Tasmanian Law Reform Institute accepted Meg’s referral to conduct a review of Tasmania’s privacy legislation, producing a research report with recommendations for reform.

Other Key Policy Areas

  • Female Leadership — As the first woman to hold the seat of Nelson, Meg has been a strong voice for gender equality in parliament. Due to Meg’s work, the government now publishes a Gender Budget Statement in relation to each state budget. As a result of Meg’s direct request to the Premier, a Parliamentary workplace culture review was undertaken by the Anti-Discrimination Commissioner, leading to a significant reform process.
  • Gambling Reform — Leading the push for meaningful poker machine reform to reduce gambling harm in Tasmanian communities.
  • Salmon Industry — Within months of being elected, Meg established and Chaired a Parliamentary Inquiry into fin fish farming in Tasmania. Meg advocates for the implementation of inquiry recommendations, including more transparency, sustainable practices, proper environmental oversight, and the removal of industrial salmon farming from inshore, biodiverse coastal areas.
  • Human Rights — Meg is a tireless advocate for a Tasmanian Human Rights Act. Meg brings a human rights lens to legislative and policy review, including anti-discrimination, disability rights, health access, child safety, and freedom to protest. Meg has successfully amended legislation to include explicit acknowledgement of fundamental human rights.

Democratic Reform

  • Electoral Reform Committee — Meg successfully established and Chairs the state Parliament’s first Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters, which will review the conduct of Tasmanian elections and consider electoral reforms.
  • House Reform — Championed necessary and common-sense democratic reforms including the restoration of the Lower House numbers.
  • Political Donation reforms — Relentlessly pursued state political donations reform, including lowering the disclosure threshold to $1000, more frequent and timely disclosures, and a ban on political donations from certain industries including gambling, tobacco, and property developers.
  • Fixed Term Elections — Advocating for Fixed Term elections for the House of Assembly.
  • Truth-In-Advertising — Advocates for the introduction of Truth-In-Advertising state laws.
