Harmony Week: A timely reminder for all
We can all attest to the importance of belonging.
To the feeling that we are seen, heard and are accepted, and also that we have a fundamental right to be seen, heard and accepted.
Annual Harmony Week provides a dedicated opportunity to celebrate all the ways in which we are enriched by cultural diversity.
It is also an opportunity to bring together Tasmanians from all different backgrounds regardless of race, culture, religion, age, disability, gender identity or sexual orientation.
In my role as Member for Nelson I have the regular privilege of welcoming new Tasmanians through our Citizenship Ceremonies. It is such an honour to realise that all those new Tasmanians have chosen to join our community, to share with us their heritage, skills and energy.
However, there is always work to do to ensure everyone can safely belong.
A key focus of Harmony Week is International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (IDERD) marked on Friday 21 March. This is an important reminder that we all have a responsibility to combat racism wherever and whenever it arises, whether it is systemic, structural, or that casual comment.Â
So, lets celebrate while ensuring everyone feels they belong this Harmony Week.
