Integrity Report Card Shines Spotlight on Secretive Government

26 February 2026

Independent Member for Nelson Meg Webb said today the release of the independent Centre for Public Integrity’s report card challenges the Rockliff Liberal Government’s claims of openness and transparency.

“Six months after the last State election, the independent CPI’s inaugural Integrity report card shines a revealing spotlight on the Liberal government’s deficient track record,” Ms Webb said.

“This integrity report card provides an independent health check of our governance oversight and transparency, and sadly we have a clear diagnosis: urgent remedial action is required.

“Actions speak louder than words, and the Premier’s claim this is the ‘most transparent Government ever’ has been well and truly debunked by the Integrity Report Card’s findings.

Critically the Report Card highlights the government’s significant integrity lapses and failure to follow through on established integrity reform efforts, with little transparency on how those decisions were made.

“The few glimmers of progress on transparency mentioned in the Report Card have largely been driven by the efforts of crossbench and independent MPs, such as the recent review of Ministerial Diaries disclosures, strengthening of state political donations laws, and the independent review of our RTI system.”

Ms Webb said the challenge now for the Rockliff Government is to heed the lessons of the independent Integrity Report Card and undertake real and timely action to transform poor performance into the A-plus transparency ratings Tasmanians’ deserve.

“We are waiting to hear that the Government is committed to delivering all recommendations of the independent RTI Review, support a rigorous ministerial diary disclosure regime, implement a mandated lobbyist code and register, reform the Integrity Commission to provide it teeth, and reset a respectful relationship with our integrity and oversight entities.

Ms Webb thanked the Centre for Public Integrity for its work, saying the periodic independent Integrity Report Card assessments of all national jurisdictions is an invaluable initiative.

“The community wants, and deserves, to know whether we can have confidence in the integrity of our governance framework.

“The CPI Integrity Report Card provides a clear-eyed reality check and a pathway forward.”
