Motion Tabled – Ombudsman Tasmania Annual Report 2024-25

The Hon. Meg Webb MLC tabled the following motion in the Legislative Council on Thursday, 6 November 2025,  drawing attention to the Ombudsman Tasmania Annual Report 2024-25 and particulalry the Ombudsman’s comments in that Annual Report highlighting the urgent need for action on previous (but ignored by government) recommendations to properly resource a separate and dedicated Tasmanian National Preventative Mechanism (TNPM) office.

The TNPM was established under the state OPCAT Implementation Act 2021 as required for Australia to meet its international obligations to establish independent emchanisms responsible for undertaking regular, unannounced inspections of places of detention in order to strengthen protections against torture and ill treatment.

Note: this motion is yet to be debated.

Under Legislative Council processes private members business can only be debated on Tuesdays of parliamentary sitting weeks.
