Celebrating cultural connection this Harmony WeekÂ
Harmony requires diversity.Â
Music defines ‘harmony’ as multiple voices contributing to the progression of chords.
It also describes the interlacing of different accounts into a single but multifaceted narrative, and the interweaving of diverse threads into a rich cultural tapestry.
Which is why Harmony Week is one of my favourite annual celebrations. It draws together Tasmanians from a range of backgrounds and recognises how diversity and inclusion enriches our communities.
It reinforces a sense of belonging for all.
I have had the pleasure of participating in a range of events and conversations which celebrate culturally diverse creative, economic, social, sporting and educative contributions which strengthen and foster a wealth of opportunities for our community as a whole.
Cultural connection needs to be celebrated, we cannot afford to take it for granted.
Significantly, Harmony Week closes on the UN International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on Saturday, March 21.
A fundamental goal for any strong and healthy society.
Throughout Harmony Week I hope you wear your favourite shade of orange and join me in celebrating belonging for all, and the rich cultural connections that strengthen our community here in Nelson and across Lutruwita/Tasmania.
