Media Release: We Should Still Implement Own Sporting Gambling Ad Ban
Tasmania Should Still Implement Own Sporting Gambling Ad Ban
3 April 2026
Independent Member for Nelson Meg Webb today welcomed the Albanese Labor Government’s proposed ban on gambling advertising in sports venues as part of its reform package, but said Tasmania must still proceed with its own gambling advertising ban in sporting venues.
“It is great to see the Prime Minister catch up to the Legislative Council on these crucial reforms to get gambling out of our sporting lives, but that does not let Premier Jeremy Rockliff off the hook,” Ms Webb said.
“Late last year the Upper House passed my motion calling for a complete ban on gambling advertising and sponsorship across all state-owned venues, including the proposed Macquarie Point Stadium, and on players’ uniforms.
“I am calling for the Rockliff Government to honour that vote and ensure our State ban is implemented by December this year and that the six months implementation progress report due by June is still delivered.
“The Legislative Council vote last year was a national first, and we can still lead the way on this significant reform.”
Ms Webb said Tasmanian children and young people could be among the first to reclaim the enjoyment of playing and watching live sport in local venues free of gambling advertising and sponsorships.
“There is no good reason for the Rockliff Government to stall the proposed State ban, especially now the federal government has acknowledged the public harm currently being caused and the need for action.”
Ms Webb said her successful motion was passed by the Legislative Council on December 2, 2025, means the state ban should be in place by December this year, while the federal reforms are only expected to “begin from” January 1, 2027.
“For all we know, the Federal gambling advertising reforms could roll out over a protracted period of time, so Tasmania could and should still lead the way by sticking to the December timeframe as called for by the Upper House.
