Kingborough group recognised as reconciliation champions
A Kingborough community group working to build understanding and connection with Tasmanian Aboriginal culture has been recognised in State Parliament.
What is KRAG?
The Kingborough Reconciliation Action Group (KRAG) is a local volunteer group dedicated to advancing reconciliation through education and community engagement.
Formed in 2024, the group is part of Reconciliation Tasmania’s Local Action Network and focuses on building understanding of Tasmanian Aboriginal history, culture and contemporary issues. KRAG hosts regular events including guest speakers, film screenings and a bi-monthly book group, providing opportunities for the community to learn, connect and engage in meaningful conversations.
The Kingborough Reconciliation Action Group (KRAG) was acknowledged in the Legislative Council after being named Reconciliation Tasmania’s 2025 Reconciliation Champions.
Member for Nelson Meg Webb praised the group’s rapid growth and impact since forming in October 2024.
“From those quiet and humble beginnings, success and recognition have flourished,” she told Parliament.
KRAG was established following community conversations in the lead-up to the 2023 Voice referendum, with members determined to continue engagement and foster greater understanding within the local community.
Since then, the volunteer-run group has hosted a range of events including public talks, film screenings and book discussions focused on Tasmanian Aboriginal history, culture and contemporary issues.
Recent events have drawn strong community interest, with one public talk attracting a standing-room-only crowd and others attended by more than 60 people.
Ms Webb said the group’s work plays an important role in building knowledge, empathy and respect within the community.
KRAG is also looking ahead, with plans to partner with Tasmanian Aboriginal representatives to host a walk on Country, aimed at strengthening local connections to culture and place.
Community members interested in learning more or getting involved with KRAG are encouraged to attend events or connect with the group through Reconciliation Tasmania’s Local Action Network.
