Kingston Tennis Club serves up 100 years; 100 years of tennis in Kingston
Kingston Tennis Club members past and present gathered on Saturday, August 22, to celebrate a century of tennis, friendship and community.
The club marked its 100th anniversary just one day before the centenary of the meeting that led to its establishment on August 23, 1926.
Originally located at Kingston Beach near the Recreation Ground, the club began with 40 members, with Mr and Mrs Baynton among those who played a prominent role in its early years.
Club President Trish Jay noted during the celebrations that the Baynton name remains familiar in Kingston today through Baynton Street.
The club remained at Kingston Beach for several decades before moving to its present location near the Kingborough Sports Centre in 1983, where funding was secured to establish new courts and a clubhouse.
Saturday’s celebration recognised the support of State and Local Governments over the years, as well as the many members and fundraising committees whose work has helped the club develop and prosper.
Tennis Tasmania’s Ali Bradley presented the club with a special plaque commemorating its 100 years of tennis.
Club Patron Peter Hodgman reflected on his more than 50 years with Kingston Tennis Club and announced his decision to step down from the patron’s role.
Ms Jay also took guests through the club’s history, sharing stories and anecdotes from its first century.
Central to that history, she said, was the friendship and fellowship that had developed among generations of members.
That spirit is reflected in the club’s motto, “It’s More Than the Tennis”, which proved particularly fitting as members and guests came together to celebrate the milestone.
Historical photographs, trophies, racquets and other memorabilia were displayed throughout the clubhouse, giving guests a glimpse into the people, competitions and events that have shaped Kingston Tennis Club since 1926.
