Upper House to Vote on Release of Stadium Revised Construction Costs

26 October 2026

Independent Member for Nelson Meg Webb said the Legislative Council will tomorrow debate a formal request for the Government to release the Macquarie Point stadium final expected total construction costs before the contract with the announced builder, BESIX Watpac, is signed.

“When the Upper House resumes, I will bring on for debate my motion calling on the Rockliff Government to provide to the Parliament the final total construction costs, also referred to as the fixed lump sum, before they sign the contract,” Ms Webb said.

“This is a fair and reasonable ask.

“Now we know who the preferred tender is, releasing the final expected construction cost will not endanger the procurement process.

“Tasmanians also deserve the basic courtesy of being told well in advance what the expected total costs will be, before we are signed up to delivering it.”

Ms Webb said the contract is expected to be signed by December.

“It will be extremely bad faith for the Government to release publicly the final revised costs, and any change that may have on the State’s contribution, a nano-second before they sign on the dotted line.

“Instead, my motion requires the Government to provide this information to the Parliament.

“There are three sitting weeks left across late November and early December, which should correlate with the expected schedule of the Stage Two negotiations currently underway to finalise that final lump sum.

“No matter what Members may think of the pros and cons of the Macquarie Point Stadium, we should be united in our common commitment to transparency and accountability, and to ensuring decision are made in the public interest, not what may best suit the Government.

“I am hopeful Tuesday’s debate will send a loud message to the Rockliff Government that the Parliament chooses the public interest and transparency.”
