Question & Answer – Parole Board of Tasmanian – Use of Artificial Intelligence
Ms WEBB question to LEADER for the GOVERNMENT in the LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL, Ms RATTRAY
Thursday 29 OctoberÂ
[2.45 p.m.]
Following revelations the Tasmanian Parole Board used unverified artificial intelligence when presenting case law, arguing for an excessive gag order to be applied to Sue Neill-Fraser and noting the Attorney General’s subsequent announcement that KordaMentha has been engaged to undertake an independent review into the Parole Board’s use of AI, can the government please:
(1) Advise:
(a) When the independent reviews terms of reference will be released publicly
(b) The timeline of that review
(c) The expected costs associated with that review
(d) Whether the review scope will include examination of the adequacy of the Parole Board’s professional standards, policy and implementation, and
(2) Detail what the government has done more broadly to assess the adequacy of current guardrails and policies regarding the use of AI across the state’s judiciary and legal fraternity to ensure current practices do not risk impeding access to justice, procedural fairness or erode public confidence, and finally
(3) Detail the outcomes of any such systemic examination, including any identified areas for reform.
