Integrity and Transparency

My Commitment

Tasmanian’s deserve better than the continued ‘secret deals’ between successive governments and private interests. This undermines our democratic system and it is unsurprising that Tasmanians are fed up with our politicians and the major parties’ vested interests.

As an independent member of Tasmania’s Legislative Council, I am committed to do my part in restoring honesty in Tasmanian politics. This means providing full transparency on my actions as a representative for the people of Nelson, as well as holding the government to account.

Priorities:

To address the erosion of public trust and minimise undue influence of vested interests in our democracy, we need to prioritise:

  • More rigorous state political donations disclosures laws.
  • Strengthening lobbying oversight.
  • Detailed and timely publication of Ministerial diaries.
  • Reform and proper funding of Tasmania’s Integrity Commission.
  • Fixed term elections for the House of Assembly. Tasmania is the only state without this provision.
  • Equitable public funding for elections for both Houses of Parliament, but only alongside campaign spending caps or donation caps.

Achievements:

Successes I have achieved in parliament to strengthen integrity and transparency:

  • In 2024, I successfully established the state’s first ever Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters, which reviews electoral functioning and reform. I chair the Committee.
  • My 2023 motion calling on the Tasmanian Government introduce regular and routine disclosure of all Ministerial diaries was passed in the Legislative Council and prompted the Government to announce it would begin quarterly Ministerial diary disclosure.
  • I have successfully moved amendments to various pieces of legislation which strengthened parliamentary oversight, imposed more rigorous accountability, and added requirements for regular review.
