Justice Reform

My Commitment

To genuinely make our community safer, we need to be smart and effective in preventing and responding to crime.

This means real action on the drivers of crime in our community through reducing disadvantage and inequality. It is also essential that our justice and corrections systems prioritise rehabilitation to ensure we minimise recidivism.

I have a strong passion for social justice and addressing disadvantage. Having worked in the community services sector for close to 20 years prior to being elected to parliament, I have seen first-hand the impact of poverty and inequality in our community.

Increasing community safety will help our state thrive. We need to be smart on crime and ensure access to an effective justice system.

Priorities:

It is a priority for me to use opportunities I have to provide a voice for those Tasmanians who need it most:

  • Climate Justice: We need to be clearly and consciously developing policy parameters  to ensure we are prioritising addressing climate change, while also ensuring we deliver ecological and social climate justice.
  • Rehabilitation and Restorative Justice: There needs to be an emphasis on reinforcing support mechanisms in the community that prevent incarceration.
  • Calling for an independent police oversight body: More than prison reform, we need to ensure that vulnerable and disadvantaged Tasmanians are treated in a just way.
  • Strengthening Integrity Oversight Entities: Independent oversight entities such as the Tasmanian National Preventative Mechanism must be properly resourced and supported so that they can identify wrongdoing and human rights abuses.

Achievements:

Here are some successes I have achieved in parliament towards reducing disadvantage and strengthening our justice system:

  • In 2023 I tabled a motion noting the Tasmanian National Preventative Mechanism’s (TNPM) inaugural Implemetation Report and calling for each of its eight recommendations to be implemented in full. It was debated and passed in the Legislative Council in November 2024. You can watch my speech here.
  • Early in 2024 I called for an appropriately resourced independent police oversight authority to be established in my Reply to the Governor’s Speech. You can watch my speech here.
  • In October 2024 I welcomed the Legislative Council voting in support of my move to adjourn debate over the Judicial Commission Bill 2024 for further examination of the proposed reforms, and made some proposed amendments to the bill which can be read here.
