Countdown to Legislative Council Election Day on 24 May

2 May 2025

The Tasmanian Electoral Commission formally announced today the nominated candidates contesting the three Legislative Council seats facing election, including the Nelson electorate currently held by Independent MP Meg Webb MLC who is seeking re-election this May.

“Voters in three Upper House seats, including the electorate of Nelson, will soon have the opportunity to take a second bite of the democracy sausage,” Ms Webb said.

“Despite it following hot on the heels of the Federal election, the strong feedback I am receiving indicates many Nelson electors are keen to exercise their voting rights once more, this time for the Tasmanian Upper House.

“Nelson voters know to secure meaningful action on their key areas of concern such as the controversial Macquarie Point stadium, the Sandy Bay UTAS campus, affordable housing reform, effective pokies reform, protecting our planning rights, and climate justice, they need a strong independent voice representing them in the Upper House.

“The two major parties have lost their way and have lost the community’s confidence.

“The Legislative Council is important for scrutinising the government of the day and holding it to account. People are telling me they recognise the Upper House is more effective with independents representing the community and doing that crucial scrutiny.

“As the current independent Member for Nelson I’ve loved working hard on behalf of the community, building a strong track record of holding the government to account, and walking the talk on integrity and transparency.  I am hoping to secure the opportunity to continue building on those foundations.

“My message to Nelson voters is please remember to vote on Saturday the 24th, and use the opportunity to help ensure the Upper House remains an independent Chamber of review rather than a rubber stamp for major parties,” Ms Webb said.

The Tasmanian Legislative Council election polling day for Nelson, Montgomery and Pembroke is on Saturday the 24th of May, with pre-polling opening on Monday the 5th of May.
