Media Release – Early Election and Gaming Donations

Media Release | March 26, 2021

Independent Member for Nelson Meg Webb today called on the Gutwein State Government and all Tasmanian political parties to rule out donations from gaming interests if an early election is called.

“In the past week we have seen major indications that Premier Peter Gutwein may call an early election,” Ms Webb said.

“Tasmanians prefer their Governments to go full term, but the calling of the election lies within the Premier’s control.

“If an early election is called, it will be under the shadow of no progress on political donation reform and prior to the Future Gaming Markets reform.

“I am calling on the Premier and his Government – as well as all other political parties – to publicly commit not to accept any pre-election donations from any poker machine industry entities or other organisations or individuals associated with the poker machine or gaming industries.”

Ms Webb said the recent release of the final PESRAC Report and the Premier’s State of the State Address contained significant omissions but also several positives.

“Further resourcing for affordable social housing is particularly welcome. However, this commitment remains far short of what will be required to substantially address that housing and homelessness challenges we face in this State.

“All investments are desperately trying not to lose further ground, rather than taking us forward towards a solution. Much bigger and bolder action will be required in the area of housing and homelessness to see our state truly thrive.

“I recommend the Government consider Shelter Tasmania’s target of increasing social housing to 10% of all dwellings in 10 years.  To achieve this target we require an additional 10,000 homes, delivered at the rate of 1000 per year.”
