Nelson Sends Loud Message to Government

Sunday, 25 May 2025

Meg Webb, who is set to be returned as the Member for the Legislative Council seat of Nelson, described the result as a resounding vote for an independent Upper House, and for greater integrity, transparency and accountability in politics.

“The people of Nelson have sent a loud and decisive message to the Liberal government.  It is my job and privilege to now ensure the government listens to and heeds that message,” Ms Webb said.

“At every Nelson polling booth, the majority of the electorate voted first for someone they knew they can trust to walk the talk on integrity, decency, honesty, and to hold the government to account.

“Importantly, this is a resounding vote by the people of Nelson for an independent Upper House.

“People have said no to government bullying and dodgy deals with corporate mates, they have rejected pork-barreling, while saying yes to community voice in our planning system, better affordable housing, protecting the UTAS Sandy Bay campus, action on climate justice and to reclaiming our waterways.

“Recognising the count is still to be finalised, the resounding vote of confidence provided by the Nelson electorate is overwhelming. The best way to say thank you is by rolling up my sleeves and getting back to work delivering for my community.

Ms Webb also acknowledged her political opponents who also contested the seat of Nelson.

“A vibrant democracy should always encourage candidates from all walks of life to throw their hat in the ring, and I acknowledge the campaign efforts of the Greens candidate Nathan Volf and Liberal candidate Marcus Vermey.

“I also say a huge thank you to everyone I have worked with over my first term and with whom I look forward to continuing to work to deliver a fairer, inclusive compassionate and sustainable Tasmania,” Ms Webb said.
