Media Release: Pressure Builds for Stadium Costs Release before Construction Contract is Signed
Pressure Builds for Stadium Costs to be Released before Construction Contract is Signed
Sunday, 6 September 2026
Independent Member for Nelson Meg Webb today said pressure is growing on the Rockliff Government to release the final estimated costings for the Macquarie Point Stadium, consistent with the recent uComms poll.
“74 per cent of poll respondents want the full cost of the project to be disclosed,” Ms Webb said.
“That is the only fair, respectful, responsible and transparent action for Premier Rockliff to take.
“We should not have to drag this information out into the light of day.
“If the Premier was treating Tasmanians with respect he would provide a clear and unequivocal commitment to release both the final total project estimated cost and the final state contribution before any construction contract is signed.
“My motion before the Legislative Council will provide the parliament an opportunity to require the government to treat Tasmanians respectfully, by releasing the final estimated costs following the end of the procurement process, but before the construction contract is finalized.”
Ms Webb said at a time when cost of living prices are increasing and access to health and education services is decreasing, it is only fair for the community to know upfront how much of their hard-earned public money is to be sunk into this black hole of a stadium.
“The community has a right to be skeptical. Tasmanians also have a right to expect better of its government.
“We need an end to the stadium secrecy and my motion provides the Parliament with an opportunity to require transparency over the final estimated stadium construction costs.”
