Support for Call for Independent Inquiry into EPA

9 May 2024

Independent Member for Nelson Meg Webb today supported the call for an independent root-and-branch inquiry into the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Tasmania, to ensure it is effectively delivering on its statutory roles and also meeting community expectations in protecting and preserving Tasmania’s treasured natural environment.

“An independent inquiry is needed as Tasmanians have a right to know whether the EPA is living up to its name and providing robust, independent protection to our state’s natural environment”, Ms Webb said.

“Public confidence in the EPA has taken a hit, especially in light of the apparent failures of regulation to address the destructive impact of the salmon industry in Macquarie Harbour, allowing the near-extinction of an ancient and unique species, the Maugean Skate.

“Regulatory oversight permitting the decimation of a Tasmanian species indicates a failure to adequately prioritise environmental protection and calls into question whether the promotion of industry-focused economic outcomes has been given too great an emphasis by the EPA.

“Tasmanians want to see the needs of future generations protected through the effective regulation of genuinely sustainable industries in this state.

“With the Tasmanian Law Reform Institute recently confirming its recommendation that a Tasmanian Human Rights Act should be established and include a right to a safe environment and to the protection of the environment from pollution and degradation, it is timely to ensure our state has an effective regulatory regime to deliver strong, independent protection of this right” Ms Webb said.
