Meg Webb to run as independent for Nelson

MEG Webb has said that a clear plan for the future, poker machine reform and transparency would be on the top of her agenda if elected to the Legislative Council in the seat of Nelson.

A sixth generation Tasmanian with two decades worth of experience in the community sector, Ms Webb said she would run as an independent with a focus on greater transparency in political donations and decision making.

“As an independent, I will work to bring more transparency to our government,” Ms Webb said.

“As a start, we need stronger political donation rules and disclosure – that’s why I’ll disclose on my website any donations greater than $1000 before people go to the polls.”

Ms Webb also wants the Legislative Council to carefully scrutinise legislation to renegotiate poker machine licences.

Ms Webb called for a shared long-term plan for Tasmania.

“Our state is charging ahead, and everyone in our community should be part of that success,” she said.

“We need a clear plan with bold aspirations, investment in infrastructure and much greater investment in our people.”

Taking a break from her role as manager of Anglicare’s Social Action and Research Centre for the campaign, Ms Webb said she wanted to contest the Nelson seat so she could make a difference.

“My whole career has been focused on making a positive difference for people in our communities, working constructively with people from all walks of life and all political stripes,” she said.

“Compassion, fairness and justice are the tenets I live by.

“I want to be a strong, honest and independent voice for those who are sick of the shouting match of partisan politics.”
