Question & Answer – School’s End-of-Year School Celebration – Letter Sent to Media Outlet

October 28, 2026

Meg Webb MLC asked the following question on the 28 October 2026 to the Minister for Education regarding a letter sent to a media outlet from the Premier to the secretary of DEYCP.

Ms WEBB question to MINISTER for EDUCATION, Ms PALMER
[2.57 p.m.]

Mr President, I have a further question on this matter I’d like to put to the minister today.
It’s in relation to the furore which erupted around the Premier’s reckless social media posts
condemning the decision of that northern primary school to renaming its end-of-year
celebrations and that resulted in the vitriol and harassment directed at school leaders, staff and
the community, and triggered the heightened security concerns. It’s in relation to the fact that a
media outlet published a letter sent on 13 October 2026 from the Premier to the secretary of
DECYP, which was also cc’d to you as minister.

I have three questions about this.

(1) Can you please confirm whether you, as minister, your office or the
secretary of DECYP provided this letter to the media?

(2) Can you please confirm whether you, as minister, your office or the
secretary of DECYP provided this letter to any members of the public,
including any who may have raised a complaint about the school’s
decision on end-of-year celebrations?

(3) Do you agree that if you, as minister, had done so, it would have likely
been a breach of the Ministerial Code of Conduct, and that if the secretary
had done so, it would likely have been a breach of the State Service Code
of Conduct?
