Question & Answer – Where is Government Response to Select Committee UTAS Act Inquiry Report?

September 1, 2026

Ms WEBB question to MINISTER for EDUCATION, Ms PALMER

Minister, my question goes to the long-awaited response to the Findings and Recommendations of the Report of the Legislative Council Select Committee on the Provisions of the University of Tasmania Act 1992, which was tabled on the 23rd of December 2024, and subsequently considered and noted by this Chamber on the 1st of April 2025.

Further Minister, I note, that in its initial response made during the April debate of last year, the government stated it would respond formally to that Report once the Federal Senate Committee on Education and Employment had completed its university inquiry, and the Commonwealth’s Expert Council on University Governance released its Principles and Recommendations in October 2025, as part of the broader Australian Universities Accord reform process.

Minister, months have now passed from the completion of those national reports.

Can you please detail to the Chamber if and when we can respect a formal response to the Select Committee’s 19 Recommendations?

Following the question asked by the Hon. Meg Webb during Legislative Council Question Time, 1 September 2026, the Minister for Education provided the response below, or which can be viewed as a pdf here:Â
